Dyslexia-Friendly Approach at Wycombe Abbey

A Dyslexia-Friendly Approach at the Wycombe Abbey Summer Programme

At the Wycombe Abbey Summer Programme, inclusion is at the heart of our academic vision. UKLC proudly introduced a dyslexia-friendly and ADHD-supportive learning approach in the summer of 2025. The programme is carefully designed to help students improve their English skills without feeling anxious or overwhelmed. With 10–15% of the population experiencing dyslexia and up to 80% of neurodiverse learners being dyslexic or ADHD (many undiagnosed), creating accessible learning environments is more important than ever.

To deliver this specialist support, our UKLC Academic Manager participated in an intensive training course led by Boelo van der Pool, CEO of Teacher Studio and a leading consultant in dyslexia and language learning. Using the knowledge gained from this training course, our Academic Manager was then able to train all academic and pastoral staff onsite. This training enables teams to confidently identify dyslexic and ADHD learners, understand how they process information, and adapt teaching strategies in real time.

Across the programme, students benefit from adjusted lesson timings, adapted task options, and dyslexia-friendly learning materials, including formatted reading, listening, and writing activities. Resources are designed with accessibility in mind, using clear fonts, structured layouts, and visual support. Teachers are trained to support both the challenges and significant strengths of dyslexic and ADHD learners, helping students to build confidence, independence, and self-belief alongside their academic progress.

The response from partners and students has been overwhelmingly positive. Roger Broadbent, Director at the Dyslexia Institute UK, described the initiative as “great news” for dyslexic language learners, while agents have welcomed the increased inclusion across UKLC’s portfolio. With themed English learning, sports, performing arts, coding, leadership, and wellbeing all offered at Wycombe Abbey, dyslexic and ADHD students are supported not only in the classroom, but in every aspect of their summer school experience.
