CÉLINE ALOÉ

Managing Director

I have been in this business for longer than I care to remember. Language learning and teaching have always been more of a passion to me than a job. I feel strongly that the experience that the young people have with us is one that they will remember for a very long time and what I love about our team is that we all care about what we do.

English is an ever more important language in the world and yes, it is a huge benefit to these young people to come to the UK to learn it. However, I believe that it is also a huge benefit to them to experience a different culture, be away from home and have to cope with all that it entails and meet and befriend people their own age from all over the world.

Academic

Academic

We know how important it is for each individual student to find their own path in language learning. We use a wide range of methods to engage and stimulate our students. This is why we have created a curriculum based on the students’ age, level and needs, structured into three different programmes:

  • FUN(Ages 8-11): Engaging lessons that offer a wide range of materials and activities specific for our young learners. It makes games into lessons and lessons into games;
  • CONNECTION(Ages 11-14): Dynamic lessons that include a variety of topics and media, especially designed to reflect the quick-paced interactive world our younger students are growing up in. Available in levels A1-C1;
  • ACTION(Ages 14-17): Lessons specifically designed to engage our older students through more suitable tasks, topics and contemporary issues.
    Available in levels A1-C1.

CONNECTION & ACTION programmes consist of three different lessons a day

  1. TBL (Task-Based Learning)
    During these lessons students are encouraged to complete a task. New language is acquired and skills developed through the task as the students speak and work together.
  2. S&S (Skills & Systems)
    These lessons aim to empower our students’ linguistic awareness and capabilities by working on all language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and systems (grammar, phonology, lexis, discourse), as well as using materials relevant to exam preparation (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, TOEFL, IELTS, GESE).
  3. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)
    These lessons merge CLIL and British Culture. Students learn about art, literature, and science, or about the history and the geography of the UK, while activating their linguistic knowledge.

Placement Tests
We offer classes at all levels from Elementary to Advanced. Students take a placement test on their first day of lessons to ensure they are placed at the correct level*. We also offer a specific test for students with special needs.

Examinations
We offer the option of taking the Trinity College London Graded Examination in Spoken English (GESE) on site for courses of 10 days or longer.**

Year-round Programmes

We can offer alternative, bespoke English language lessons for our ministay groups. We can deliver a range of English for Specific Purposes courses on request so please contact the team to discuss your group’s requirements.

Students are taught in class sizes up to 16.

* *Due to the variability of students’ test results, a single class may occasionally
include students of slightly different levels.
**Minimum of 10 students across all groups required to source an examiner.
Welfare

Welfare

As specialists in programmes for young people aged 8-17, the safeguarding of children is fundamental to the way UKLC views and ensures the well-being of its students. We have developed robust systems and processes for managing the welfare of children in our centres.

Steps we take to ensure the welfare of students;

  • All staff undergo appropriate background and safeguarding checks;
  • A dedicated Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator is appointed to every site during the summer. For year-round groups our Ministay Coordinators manage safeguarding and welfare support;
  • All students are given an induction lesson highlighting the rules for their centre and all group leaders attend an induction meeting when they arrive which details their responsibilities;
  • We work with group leaders to ensure their students have a safe and enjoyable stay, taking full responsibility for students when they are in lessons and on scheduled activities. We assist group leaders to ensure students’ safety and care outside of scheduled activities and during excursions;
  • UKLC staff are available 24 hours a day for any issue that may arise and there is a 24-hour emergency number for partners, parents and students;
  • All students get a UKLC wristband and lanyard to be worn at all times;
  • Individuals are allocated to a member of UKLC staff who will act as their group leader and point of reference at all times (summer only);
  • Our Operations and Safeguarding Handbook is distributed to all staff and is available to download on the website. Policies and procedures for welfare and safeguarding are available on our website and in our downloadable handbooks.

Student Resilience and Wellbeing;

Whilst the physical welfare and safety of our students has always been important, we believe that we need to focus on their mental welfare too.
In recent years there has been a greater awareness of mental health in young people. An experience away from home, especially in the current global climate, is an opportunity to strengthen that.

Along with sessions on General Safety and e-Safety, we have introduced a new session for every student. We dedicate lesson time to “Resilience and Well-being”. It will help students to process the ever-changing world around them and their ability to adapt to it. We also offer them ideas and tools to manage their own well-being.

Teaching

TEACHING

Have you ever asked yourself what makes a good summer school experience for a qualified English language teacher?

We believe the answer is working in a relaxed and friendly environment where you are supported not only by academic management but equally by the other members of the team.

We believe the answer is finding yourself in a place where everything has been well thought out and organised, including what you are going to teach in your lessons, while giving you the freedom to use some of your own tailor-made tried-and-tested lesson plans.

We believe the answer is to have a bank of great resources full of interesting and engaging task-based learning lessons that you will have access to and training in.

We believe the answer is creating the kind of environment where teachers feel it is more than a stop-gap summer job, rather a chance to develop and progress, make new teaching contacts and friends, gather experience and ideas to take with you in your teaching career and hopefully come back to us in the future.

You can find more information about this role in the job descriptions by clicking the “available downloads” button above. To apply, send an up-to-date CV to [email protected]

Sports & Activities

Sports & Activities

SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES

As Sports and Activity Instructors, your role is to help organise and deliver the social side of the students’ stay. Social activities offer the students a balance to the academic programme, an opportunity to explore the new environment and enjoy different experiences, and a chance to mix with fellow students.  The social programme is divided into three parts, sport and activity sessions, evening activities and excursions.

In your role, you are expected to provide safe, fun and developmental sessions that ultimately engage and entertain the students.  If you feel that you have the necessary skills and qualifications,  please email a copy of your CV to [email protected]

Management

Management

MANAGEMENT

Summer school management is in a world of its own. In what other temporary job would you get such an exhilarating mix of cultures, people and situations? To say it is hectic is an understatement but to certain high-achieving, well-organised, skilled individuals with a killer sense of humour, it is a lot of fun (and somewhat addictive).

If you feel you have the necessary experience, skills and qualifications to be a Centre Manager, a Course Director or an Excursion & Activities Manager then we would love to hear from you.

Isabelle Ashcroft, Sports & Activity Instructor

I arrived at York and received a very warm welcome from all of the UKLC
team, which I very quickly felt part of too. I was very aware of my role and
responsibilities as a Sports & Activity Instructor well in advance before the children arrived, this was because of the training days and support
from all members of staff. Our centre manager was very organised in ensuring that everyone knew what they were doing and felt confident to do so.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at York, it has really secured my decision in
wanting to be a coach in the future.

Anthony Clarke, English Teacher

Anthony Clarke, English Teacher

I first contacted UKLC shortly after finishing my CELTA in early 2014. They were looking for new teachers to go on a month-long 'Leonardo' work experience placement in Spain. I thought it was too good to miss! In no time at all I was on a week-long residential training course in Cheshire and soon after that in Spain itself, in Elche (Alicante), where I had a wonderful four weeks teaching full time in a language academy. I pretty much worked out there and then that was where my future lay. I made some great friends too!
On returning to the UK I worked for UKLC for four weeks in their York summer school, which was great fun. This summer I worked in York again and also in Southampton.
UKLC very much treat you as part of their 'family'. I would strongly recommend UKLC.

Rachel Jeffries, Course Director

Rachel Jeffries, Course Director

I’ve worked for UKLC for a few years now, starting out as a teacher and
taking the role of Course Director in recent years. Working for this company led me to make a move away from secondary public school teaching to the world of EFL permanently. I am currently working in a language school in the south of Italy
and completing my DELTA qualification. So along with a career path and clear
goals I also have to thank UKLC for some unforgettable memories. The past three years have given me some amazing new friends, some who return every year and become like family.

Adam Mathews, Centre Manager

Adam Mathews, Centre Manager

I clearly remember my first day as a Centre Manager. I was loaded up with paper after paper by the college, keys, keys and more keys, and I had so many new places to familiarise myself with. What got me through those days was knowing that, at any moment, I could speak to Celine or Nathan and they would always be there to listen or advise. Although centre managing requires a huge amount of independence, I have never once felt I was on my own.

Bryan Yule, Course Director

Bryan Yule, Course Director

The thing that initially drew me to UKLC’s summer school was its promise to be ‘a friendlier kind of summer school’. I confess I was initially skeptical, thinking that this claim might be mere marketing platitude, but all my years working with UKLC have borne this claim out. It really is an extremely friendly environment to work in, with mutual respect running from the top of the organization and encompassing everyone involved, UKLC staff, students at the schools, group leaders and the staff at the centres.

Aaron Fearnley, English Teacher

Working for UKLC has always been a pleasure. It feels almost wrong to call it work, considering that you get paid to have fun and spend time with genuinely good people. No matter which role you take at the company, there is a spirited sense of togetherness. I started working for the company as an Activity Leader at a summer school. Later, I took advantage of the fantastic opportunity brought about by the Leonardo Project, which allowed me to gain work experience as a teacher in Spain. This gave me the confidence and expertise to work for UKLC as a teacher at two different schools in England. All of these experiences have exceeded expectations whilst making me realise that hard work needn't feel like hard work.

Emily Maybanks, Teacher & Activity Leader

Emily Maybanks, Teacher & Activity Leader

I first worked for UK Language Courses at Queen Anne’s school in Reading in summer 2017. I had recently completed an online course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language so I was keen to put my qualification to use. I enjoyed working for UKLC in 2017 because it was my first experience of teaching English and I loved it and it inspired me to undertake further advanced TEFL courses. In summer 2018, I returned to work for UKLC at Queen Anne’s again. I have enjoyed my work with UKLC because of the support from senior members of staff, as well as the opportunity to meet lots of new people – students and staff alike. I was also able to teach a variety of lessons and gain valuable teaching experience which I am certain will be helpful when I eventually move to China to begin a career in teaching English.

Basil Hadithy, Teacher & Activity Leader

The effective management of the centres and teachers has enabled me to focus on my relations with the students. A flexibility that allows me to reflect the mood of the class onto re-engaging with the students.
As a teacher, establishing a pleasant rapport with all my students, turning a lesson interesting is what has made me come back.

UKLC stands out to me because it’s a company that cares for its staff in so many ways. You really are part of a family when working for UKLC. It is very well organised!
One sentence that sums up UKLC: “Simply no better way to spend your summer”

Norman Gettings

Norman Gettings

This year I’ve taught several mini stays (St Albans & Colindale) as a Teacher/Excursion Leader and returned to the UK in the summer to work as a Full Time Teacher at Chichester University and Kings College, London.

UKLC ensures that students have as much fun as you can pack into a short visit, while improving their English. The curriculum works well and there are plenty of colleagues around to help, give advice and offer ideas.
Classes and activities are designed to be fun and engaging, and every member of staff is encouraged to bring their personality and enthusiasm into the classroom.

There are highs and lows, of course, but I’d certainly recommend working for UKLC at a summer school or ministay.

It’s not easy to pick a single highlight but, for me, it has to be the people - fellow teachers, excursion leaders, sports staff, group leaders and students - who helped me realise that there are so many paths to take, places to see and new folk to meet.

After all the positive feedback and personal recommendations that I had received, I was delighted to be UKLC’s ‘Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator’ in York and Chester this summer. I am particularly impressed by the team work and acceptance of diversity in both centres. My main task was to help ensure that students (and staff) stayed safe, healthy and happy. I also enjoyed being a go-to person and a link between wonderful students, Group Leaders and staff. Preparation and training, including First Aid and updates on Child Protection, were excellent and always highly relevant. As a qualified and experienced languages teacher I also appreciated being given the opportunity to teach on the Ministay courses in September, which were extremely well organized.

It’s was my first year working with UKLC and my first time teaching full time. It was rewarding in every way. The support from the vastly experienced team and the environment created was one I immediately knew I could thrive in. The team at both sites I worked, Chichester and London, became a family and I made some great friends in the process. I’d recommend it to anyone with a passion for teaching because this is the place to flourish.
